Most people picture Hochatown in summer: boats on Broken Bow Lake, tubes on the Mountain Fork, and packed restaurants on Highway 259. But locals will tell you fall and winter are the best-kept secret in southeastern Oklahoma.
The crowds thin out, the pines and hardwoods put on a show, and there's nothing better than ending a cold day in a private hot tub under the stars. If you're planning a cozy-season getaway, here's everything worth doing in Hochatown this fall and winter, plus where to stay.

🍂 1. Chase the Fall Colors in Beavers Bend State Park
Beavers Bend is one of Oklahoma's top spots for fall foliage. Red, orange, and gold hardwoods mix with the evergreen pines along Broken Bow Lake and the Mountain Fork River, and the colors usually peak from late October into early November.
Our tips:
- Drive the park roads and the lake overlooks in the morning, when the light hits the water
- Walk the Cedar Bluff Nature Trail or a section of the David L. Boren Trail for quiet, crowd-free views
- Bring your camera. The river and lake reflections are what make Beavers Bend famous this time of year
🎻 2. Beavers Bend Folk Festival & Craft Show (Nov 13–15, 2026)
This is one of the most popular fall weekends in the area. The festival takes over the Forest Heritage Center inside Beavers Bend State Park with old-time craft demonstrations like blacksmithing, woodturning, papermaking, and basket weaving, plus folk music, handmade gifts, and festival food.
- ✔ Friday & Saturday 9am–5pm, Sunday 10am–4pm
- ✔ Admission has traditionally been free
- ✔ Great for early Christmas shopping
Festival weekend cabins go fast, so if you want to be here for it, grab your dates now.
🦅 3. Spot Bald Eagles on Broken Bow Lake
Every winter, bald eagles make the lakes and rivers of southeastern Oklahoma their seasonal home, roughly November through February. Bring binoculars, bundle up, and scan the shoreline and tall trees around Broken Bow Lake. The park has hosted guided eagle watches in past winters, so call the Beavers Bend park office at (580) 494-6300 to see what's scheduled.
🎣 4. Fish for Trout on the Lower Mountain Fork River
The Lower Mountain Fork is one of only two year-round trout fisheries in Oklahoma, and the cold months are a great time to fish it. Late fall is especially good for big brown trout, and you'll have far more of the river to yourself than in summer.
- ✔ Rainbow and brown trout are stocked in the river below Broken Bow Dam
- ✔ Much of the river runs through Beavers Bend State Park with easy bank access
- ✔ An Oklahoma fishing license is required, and special trout rules apply, so check the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation regulations before you go
Prefer to fish without leaving your cabin? The Incredi-Dome sits right on a private catch-and-release pond, with fishing poles and tackle provided.
🥾 5. Hike the Trails Without the Crowds
Winter days in Hochatown are often mild, typically ranging from the 30s at night into the 50s during the day. That makes it a great season for longer hikes. With the leaves down, you'll get views of the river and ridgelines you can't see in summer.
🚂 6. Ride the Beavers Bend Train
The Beavers Bend Depot runs a one-third-scale replica train on a short loop through the woods, complete with a tunnel. It's a hit with kids and a fun, easy outing on a crisp afternoon. Hours can change in the off-season, so call ahead.
🍷 7. Sip Your Way Through Hochatown
Cold weather is the perfect excuse to spend an afternoon tasting. Hochatown has a cluster of local wineries, breweries, and a distillery, many within a few minutes of each other:
- Beavers Bend Brewery
- Mountain Fork Brewery
- Girls Gone Wine
- Vojai's Winery
- Hochatown Distilling Company
Plan a designated driver, or start early and head back to the cabin for the evening.
🏛️ 8. Rainy-Day Pick: The Forest Heritage Center
If the weather turns, the Forest Heritage Center Museum inside Beavers Bend is a great indoor stop. It tells the story of Oklahoma's forests and is known for its impressive wood art collection.
🎄 9. Holiday Getaways & Family Gatherings
Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's are some of the most memorable times to be in the woods, and more families are swapping a crowded house for a cabin trip. If your group is too big for one place, our Pine Acres Glamping cabins sit together on the same property, so you can book more than one and still keep everyone close.
Holiday dates are the first to fill. Check holiday availability here.
🔥 10. Do Absolutely Nothing (Seriously)
The best part of a fall or winter trip is the cabin itself. Coffee on the porch while the deer wander by. A fire pit and s'mores after dark. A soak in your own hot tub when it's 35 degrees outside. That's the whole point.
Bonus: every one of our guests gets complimentary access to the Sweat Shack in Broken Bow, with a full gym, infrared sauna, and cold therapy room. It's the perfect way to warm up on a chilly morning.
